Description
This no-salt Christmas ornament dough is easy to make at home, creating a smooth, bright white dough that holds detail and dries hard.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup cornstarch (cornflour)
- 2 cups baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
- 1 1/4 cups water, plus a little more if needed
- 1 tablespoon white glue (PVA glue) — optional for extra strength
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil — optional, for smoothness
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine cornstarch and baking soda. Stir to mix well.
- Add water slowly and whisk to remove lumps. Incorporate glue and oil if using.
- Heat the mixture over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and pulls away from the pan.
- Remove from heat and let cool briefly until manageable.
- Turn the dough onto a clean surface and knead until smooth; adjust with cornstarch or water as needed.
- Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Cut shapes using cookie cutters and make holes for hanging with a straw or skewer.
- Place shapes on a tray lined with parchment paper.
- Dry them in a low oven at 200°F (95°C) for 1.5–2 hours or air dry for 24–48 hours, turning occasionally.
- Once dry, sand edges if necessary, paint, and seal with choice of sealer.
