Description

A simple and warm recipe for classic gingerbread cookies that are soft, spicy, and perfect for the holiday season.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup brown sugar (packed)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • ½ cup molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  2. Beat in molasses and egg.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, salt, and spices.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture. Mix into dough.
  5. Wrap dough and chill for 1 hour.
  6. Roll out dough to ¼-inch thickness. Cut into shapes.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes until edges firm.
  8. Cool completely before decorating with icing or sprinkles.

Notes

If the dough gets too soft while working, chill it again for 10-15 minutes.
