Description

A rich and creamy hot cocoa made with real cocoa and chocolate for a deep chocolate flavor.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk (or milk of choice)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 ounce dark chocolate, finely chopped (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A tiny pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch (for extra thickness)
  • Toppings: whipped cream, marshmallows, a sprinkle of cocoa or cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Pour the milk into a small saucepan and warm it over medium-low heat. Do not boil. Heat until small bubbles form around the edge.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the cocoa powder and sugar. If using, add cornstarch to this dry mix.
  3. Add a few tablespoons of the warm milk to the dry mix and stir into a smooth paste. This prevents lumps.
  4. Pour the paste back into the pan with the warm milk. Whisk until smooth.
  5. Add the chopped dark chocolate and the pinch of salt. Stir until the chocolate melts and blends in.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Taste and add more sugar if desired.
  8. Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream or marshmallows.

Notes

Serve fresh and hot, with toppings like whipped cream and a sprinkle of cocoa. Adjust sugar level to taste.
