Ingredients
Scale
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Red or pink food coloring
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, sugar, and vanilla extract until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes).
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing until combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients until a dough forms. Add additional flour if the dough is too wet.
- Take 1/2-2/3 of the dough aside, adding food coloring to the remaining dough until desired hue is achieved.
- Chill the colored dough for 5 minutes, then roll it into a rectangle about 1/2-inch thick and freeze for 20 minutes.
- Use a heart cookie cutter to cut out shapes and adhere them together with a tiny bit of water.
- Wrap plain cookie dough around the heart shapes, roll into a log, and freeze for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare baking sheets.
- Slice the log into 1/4-inch rounds and bake for about 12 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool before serving.
