Description

A comforting and delicious apple crisp featuring warm, cinnamon-spiced apples topped with a buttery crumble, perfect for autumn gatherings.


Ingredients

  • 5 lbs. McIntosh apples (or Macoun apples)
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ packed cup light brown sugar
  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • ½ lb. butter (diced and chilled)
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them into thin wedges.
  3. Add lemon zest, lemon juice, orange zest, orange juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg to the apples and mix well.
  4. Transfer the apple mixture into a buttered baking dish.
  5. Mix flour, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, oatmeal, and kosher salt in another bowl.
  6. Add the chilled diced butter to the dry ingredients and mix until you achieve coarse crumbs.
  7. Top the apples with the streusel mixture evenly.
  8. Bake for about 60 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
  9. Cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with ice cream, whipped cream, or yogurt. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
