Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Sift the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder together.
  3. Mix the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar until smooth.
  4. Combine the dry ingredients with the wet mixture until just combined.
  5. Prepare the pans by dividing the batter evenly between them.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, checking with a toothpick in the center.
  7. Cool the cakes for 10 minutes in the pans before transferring to a wire rack.
  8. Prepare the frosting by beating the cream cheese and butter until smooth, then adding powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
  9. Assemble the cake by layering frosting between the cooled cakes and coating the outside.
